Synopsis One of the last existing outposts of Russian Army, seen with the eyes of a 19-year-old recruit. In the middle of (frozen) nowhere, more than one thousand kilometers from the nearest tree, a handful of experienced soldiers and their young assistant are left alone to cope with themselves, with magnificent nature and with obsolete political ideas forcing them to keep going while they fight invisible enemies on the border. Alexei must win the respect of his elderly superiors by carrying out more or less absurd and meaningless daily rituals and routine. This film does not criticize; it tells us a human story about isolated people who seek shelter from the clumsy chaos of civilian life under the self-imposed military order and discipline. Unforgettable characters whose secrets and demons from their civilian life are tinted with a Russian blend of melancholy and male courage.
