Synopsis
The film is about Andrzej Kenig, who arrives in this new part of Poland following his release from a concentration camp. He would like to start a new life here and looks for a job. Eventually he is allowed to join a group of men, led by a ‘Doctor’, who are given the task of ensuring that the goods left behind by the Germans are passed in a proper state to the new authorities so that Polish repatriates from the East can take possession of them. It turns out, however, that Kenig’s comrades, some of them brutalised by the misery of war, regard this as an opportunity to enrich themselves. Kenig has to stand up to them in an unequal battle, reminiscent of High Noon (1952) by Fred Zinnemann. However, the authors of this Polish Western did not chose ‘high noon’ as its setting, but darkness, in line with the tradition of German Expressionism and Polish School films such as Wajda‘s Kanal (1957), which influenced directors Hoffman and Skórzewski.

Directors Biography
Jerzy Hoffman (1932, Poland) started his film career with short documentaries that he made with Edward Skórzewski. Hoffman directed several of the most successful Polish super productions, such as 'Pan Wolodyjowski' (1969), 'Deluge' (1974) and 'With Fire and Sword' (1999).

Edward Skorzewski (1930-1991, Poland) was one of the best Polish documentary filmmakers, known predominantly for the so called Black Series, with Jerzy Hoffman. De Black Series broke with the Utopian vision and did not shirk from tackling and naming social problems such as vandalism, prostitution, alcoholism, unemployment and child abuse.
