POLITICAL CAMPAIGN CLIPS

One type of films that provokes numerous reactions of audience and media on daily basis are political spots. Every four years, approximately a month before elections, our minds become exposed to this bombardment. They are hard to avoid because they run in prime time and are short enough so that you cannot switch the channel. But then again, they may be intriguing enough to be seen. Since 1990, political spots for parliamentary, presidential or mayor elections have been attracting our attention just almost as much as jumbo posters. In 2007, just before then election, Zagreb Film Festival decided to present a selection of the best/worst/interesting etc… election video spots, because a glance into political past is certainly a refreshing reminder on our earlier political choices: who was deservedly elected, who was not, and who should not be. Of course, the political spots of the 2007 campaign were not included in our program because the campaign started immediately after the end of the ZFF. Since that campaign included some of the sports which have become iconic in the meantime (and they were followed by the almost equally iconic election for Zagreb Mayor), ZFF has decided to come up with a new selection. In a single night, with no reruns, we will show the most important election spots from 1990 – 2011: from Franjo Tuđman to Ivo Josipović, from HDZ to SDP, from Željko Kerum to Milan Bandić. It will be interesting to see former political protagonists who are now in prison or detention, former mayors, parliamentary deputies supporting one party then and switching to its total opposite in the meantime etc. All this will be accompanied with some music: in one or another part of their careers, some of Croatia's top performers have made musical videos supporting certain parties or candidates. All this, using New York underground stand-up performances as a role model, will be commented by a moderator and the best electoral sport will be selected. So come to Cinema Tuškanac!
